Taking the time to think deeply about how social media is affecting our body confidence and self-esteem is important to ensure that it does not continue to affect people negatively. We are so much more than our edited online lives.
Our online profiles are an extension of our offline lives and social media will only become more apart of our daily interactions. Thinking about what we post, what others post, and how it impacts our relationships and understanding of people is key to combating negative feelings that can arise when surfing through social media sites. Social media is a new form of media and just like magazines it is easy to have a false understanding of the reality of what we are presented. Social media is even more complex because our interactions include people we may be very close to in the offline world. We must bring more awareness around the idea of online profiles be created, manipulated, and filtered by the user. We must keep in mind that online profiles are an edited representation of a person. Social media is not going away, but we can think critically about how we and how others choose to use it.
