Thank you to Markham Dairy Queen owners goes viral

Markham Economist & Sun

A simple “thank you” can go a long way.

One in particular has grabbed the attention of news organizations across North America – and it’s centred on a Dairy Queen right here in Markham.

Dr. Nabiha Islam, a former employee at a Dairy Queen along Kennedy Road, never forgot the sincere kindness her boss Yvonne Lavasidis showed her throughout her employment.

The accomplished doctor recently chose to send her former boss a simple card, thanking Lavasidis for all the support while she studied in school.

“Well, I’m a doctor now,” was the first line in Islam’s short but certainly heartfelt letter.

“Thank you for supporting and encouraging me, for barbecuing halal chicken for me and allowing me to study for my MCATs in the back when no customer were around,” she added.

The letter gained wild popularity last week after a friend of Lavasidis and her husband, George, shared the letter on Reddit.

It was featured on the website for NBC’s Today Show in the U.S.

The Lavasidis’ own the Dairy Queen in Milliken Mills, along with Yvonne’s brother Dean.
