Living out the Five Love Languages

By: Natalie Leibowitz

It’s easy for us to assume that others would want to be shown love and understanding in the same way that we would, but the truth is that each person’s wants and needs are different. Even with the best of intentions, sometimes we simply cannot understand what someone else is going through and what we can do to help them feel better.

According to author Gary Chapman, there are five “love languages”, which demonstrate the ways in which people may prefer to be supported by their loved ones. These include words of affirmation, quality time, receiving gifts, acts of service, and physical touch. Communication is key in building strong relationships. The love languages can be used as a tool to open up that line of communication and begin to share with your loved ones what your needs are and how you prefer to be shown love from others.
