We are kicking off Eating Disorder Awareness Week (EDAW) day 1 with a Fireside Conversation event in Aurora! This evening, from 6:00 – 8:00, members from the community – including people with lived experience with mental health issues, family members and supporters, and clinicians and professionals – are joining in our art gallery and office to have an open conversation about eating disorders and other mental health issues.
This week’s EDAW theme is Eating Disorders are Not a Choice. There is still a lot of stigma and misconceptions out there about eating disorders and why they occur. It’s not just about ‘wanting to lose weight’ or ‘not being able to control your eating’ – eating disorders are a mental illness that affect people of all genders, races, cultures, classes, and backgrounds. There are biological, environmental, and social components that interact to cause eating disorders to manifest and it can take a strong system of support in order for someone to recover.
Throughout the week you will be hearing from members of our Faces of Recovery campaign who will share their ideas around the theme of Not a Choice. We will also be talking about the theme of Maintaining Wellness, Riverwalk’s own theme for 2017, because mental wellness is not just about preventing and dealing with mental illness, it’s also about achieving and nurturing mental wellness.
If you have a story or art piece about either of the themes that you’d like to share, contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we can publish it on our blog! Help us get the word out there this EDAW and help change public perceptions around eating disorders and mental health issues!
